As of the census of 2000, there were 14,547 people - 5,324 households - and 3,939 families residing in the county. The population density was 33 people per square mile.

There were 5,324 households out of which 34.80% had children under the age of 18 living with them - 61.70% were married couples living together - 8.90% had a female householder with no husband present - and 26.00% were non-families.  The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.04.

The median income for a household in the county was $42,428 - and the median income for a family was $49,592. Males had a median income of $31,721 versus $24,938 for females. The per capita income for the county was $18,736.

Historic Sites/Museums

Mills County Historical Museum - Glenwood Includes 150 years of SW Iowa history, 10000 years of Indian culture, antique cars and tractors, printing press, threshing machine, bottle collection and 4-H uniforms.

Indian Earth Lodge - When highway 34 from Glenwood was built over the hill to Interstate 29, many earth lodges were found.  Many of the items found there are on display in the museum.  As the items were carbon dated, it was found those people lived around the area
from about 900- to 1400 AD. 

Salem Lutheran Church - US Hwy 275, just south of the Pottawattamie county line
Built in 1867 by German immigrants this church is now one of western Iowa's oldest buildings.
 

Indian Creek Historical Society and Museum - located on Highway 34 between Hastings and Emerson. The facility contains many tractors, farm equipment, etc. and holds a number of activities, educational and social for the area.

Trails and Byways

Wabash Trace Nature Trail - Malvern/Silver City/Mineola
Trail runs 63 miles of crushed limestone that runs through the Loess Hills along a converted railroad right-of-way.

Loess Hills Scenic Byway - West edge of Mills County - Windblown soils known as Loess (pronounced luss) create the fragile hills along the western edge of Iowa.
